Unlike other programs which typically offer the ability to complete general education courses at a community college to earn credits, Discover UC San Diego will offer courses in each major that will count toward a degree. This allows students to explore a major they believe they are interested in to determine if it's a good fit, and earn credits for their work at the same time.
AP courses are not offered at all high schools In fact, AP courses are offered less at schools that tend to be located in higher-poverty areas, or in communities that have larger percentages of students who are already underrepresented on college campuses. This is not equitable. Offering these courses, and support services, online and at no-to-low-cost, allows all students to earn college credits and experience university coursework, with support to be successful.
No. Students can continue to take the AP courses offered at their high schools and also enroll in Discover UC San Diego courses.
UC Scout courses help students satisfy A-G subject requirements to meet the University of California and California State University admission requirements. Discover UC San Diego courses allow students to earn college credits across a broad set of subjects and experience studying in a university context. Discover UC San Diego courses may help students satisfy the A-G requirements but are primarily designed to give students the experience of taking college-level courses.
No. Students can still take AP, dual enrollment, community college offerings, or UC Scout courses depending on their educational goals and what their high school offers.
This program is for every high school student in their junior or senior year who wants to experience taking university-level courses. The courses are designed to be accessible and at a pace that allows students to get used to the rigors of a college course
Discover UC San Diego courses are college-level courses offered to high school students. That is, high school students, will learn college-level material but will not be in the same class as college students. Also, the length of courses will follow the high school semester calendar and therefore be stretched over a more extended period than UC San Diego's quarter calendar. The courses also offer greater support from instructors, teaching assistants, and tutoring.
Participating in Discover UC San Diego, an UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies educational program, does not provide preference for admission to any University of California degree program. If you are interested in applying to these programs, you should refer to the UCSD Admissions website or the admissions office of the UC campus you wish to attend for details about the admissions process
