How Will Discover UC San Diego Work?

Discover UC San Diego is beginning with a pilot program that will involve about 500 students from local San Diego-area high schools that have high numbers of students who are typically underserved in higher education and underrepresented on college campuses.

A couple of courses from five different majors - those that broadly represent the breadth of offerings at UC San Diego - are being offered during the pilot.

The majors are:

  • Computer Science
  • Linguistics
  • Ethnic Studies
  • Marine Science/Earth Science
  • Music

In addition to providing the digital courses, students will also be provided tutoring and other support resources to help them be successful in the classes. In the future, the courses will be translated into Spanish, will be taught by professors from a variety of backgrounds and materials will also be provided for family members and teachers to aid in their support of enrolled students.

After a successful pilot, the goal is to scale up the program, offering three introductory courses from all 160 majors at UC San Diego to every student in California for free, or for a very low cost.
