LTSP 2D: Intermediate/Advanced Spanish for Bilingual Speakers


About This Course

Explore your cultural heritage to the Spanish language and culture in the United States and build off your Spanish speaking abilities.

This course is offered by the Literature Department at UC San Diego. This course counts for 4 units credit towards a language requirement or general elective. 

What You Will Learn


This course is designed for those students who learned Spanish at home; or other students from Spanish-speaking backgrounds that have little or no formal training in the language. The main goals of the course are to enhance students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in a culturally relevant setting. Students also explore their cultural heritage and learn about Hispanic cultures in the United States and the language diversity of its speakers.

  • Experiences growing up bilingual in the US 
  • Spanish in the community 
  • Connections between Spanish spoken at home and what is learned in the classroom 
  • Latinx Identity 
  • Spanish language and culture 

What You Will Do


By the end of the course, you will:

  • Develop an understanding of the culture of their heritage language and appreciate the diversity found among the Hispanic cultures
  • Develop sociolinguistic awareness to the dialectal variation in the Spanish speaking world
  • Develop positive attitudes towards speaking their heritage variety of Spanish
  • Expand lexical repertoire in Spanish
  • Develop communicative competence, especially in conversation and listening

Prerequisites


This course is designed for those students who learned Spanish at home; or other students from Spanish-speaking backgrounds who have little or no formal training in the language

 

Course Meeting Details


Required Live Sessions: None

Course content (video lectures, discussion prompts, readings, etc.) is delivered asynchronously. All assignments and exams will be submitted online.

The instructional staff will hold scheduled (synchronous) weekly instructor office hours, which are optional and also available by appointment.
